This Months Fly is the :

The Other JB Stone (The Adult)

This fly is a perfect match to the JB Stone nymph in its fish catching effectiveness and ease of tying.

This fly was developed a year ago on the Henry’s Fork during one of the most incredible Stonefly hatches we have seen on the Fork.

This pattern was used to catch some very nice fish during the hatch on both the South Fork and the Henry’s Fork and while filming the videos for Fly fishing Video Magazine.

This is due I believe for several reasons one being the color is different than most and the extended body and the way it rides low in surface film. The extended body gives it a UN interrupted silhouette, which I believe is very important in any fly.

If you get to chase the Salmon Fly hatch this year definitely take this pattern with you and give it try it has fooled hundreds of trout in the peak of the hatch.

Fishing Instructions

To pattern is a dry fly and should be fished on the surface with the aid of fly floatant and dead drifted, but it also is a good idea to impart a little action to this fly once in while by twitching the rod tip or short quick strips of the line .I have also had some terrific strike when allowed to drag and swing across the current from the bank out.

One other important thing to keep in mind is that generally this fly is fished to the bank within inches, but do not overlook the fact that after these fish have had hundreds of fisherman and boats go by they tend to start moving more toward the middle of the rivers and streams for protection. And after being hooked several times they are not so easily fooled and this is where this pattern shines.

Tying Instructions

Put hook in vice and attach the brown tying thread to the hook cover the shank of the hook back to the bend and bring thread back to 2/3 area of shank.

Now take the deer body hair and cut a bunch about the size of a pencil when compressed, and tie it in butts first to the 2/3 shank area and start wrapping back to the bend of the hook with open wraps about 1/8 inch between. Wrap this back and extend off the back of the hook about a ¼ of the shank length and make several wraps at this point to secure the hair. Bring the thread forward crossing back over the wraps making an X pattern, back to the starting point.

At this time I like to change thread so whip finish the brown thread and tie in the orange thread and wrap down the body and back just like we did with the brown thread, bring back to just ahead of the starting point about 3/16 of inch or so.

Take the bleached Elk hair and cut a small bunch about half of what we used for the body and even the tips with your hair stacker. Now measure the length of the wing so the tips are just at the end of the body and tie in, Secure very well at this point.

Add a little head cement at the wing and the butt end now, this will help the durability of the fly.

Run a thread base forward to just behind the eye of the hook and bring back to midway between eye and wing.

To tie the bullet head styles we are going to take a small bunch of hair the dark brown deer color, and cut the butt ends even and measure the length to about the hook point and trim butt ends again to length.

Now bring hair over eye of hook, butt ends first to just behind the point were we stopped the thread, and start tying the hair down and if it twists around the hook a little don’t worry it doesn’t matter. Bring the thread forward to just behind the eye and back to midway, add a little cement at this time.

Now with the first two fingers and thumb stroke the hair back towards the back of the hook shank and when you get a nice tight looking head make several wraps of thread right over the top of each other making a little orange band and forming a bullet head.

Take two brown rubber legs and tie one in on each side to form an X.

Whip finish trying not make the thread band too wide.

Put another drop of cement here and trim the hair on the bottom of the fly to keep the hook gap area open.
